Mosquito County, Florida

In 1824, not long after the 1821 acquisition of Florida by the United States, the Florida legislature created the county of Mosquito. This county included a good part of what later became known as Volusia, Polk, St. Lucie, Flagler and Orange counties. In 1842 a bill passed both houses of the legislature changing the name to Leigh Read County. The legislature, however, never presented the bill to the governor for his signature and it never became law.

Between 1845 and 1854 Mosquito County was subdivided into the various counties known today. Volusia County was established in 1854 though, at that time, it included Cape Canaveral and other parts of Brevard County.
